18th Century cottage garden in Cornwall
An 18th Century cottage situated on the border of Devon And Cornwall just outside of Tavistock had all the structure in place but needed a new planting scheme to rejuvenate the tired shrubs and existing plants. The client(s) were also putting in a timber garden room and wanted to create an idyllic spot from which to enjoy the garden and spectacular views.
The planting scheme included all the classic cottage garden plants such as roses, geranium, holly hocks, achillea, nigella (Love-in-the-mist), sildacea, delphiniums and of course the beautifully fragrances lavender and sweet peas. Attracting plenty of wildlife was important and of course colour is essential for attracting bees and butterflies.
The garden was divided into areas of different colour including a large bed at the top of the garden providing only white throughout the year and a blue and white bed and then a blue white and yellow bed and then a pink and white bed and so on. This enabled us to fill the garden with colour but in such a way that the eye could comfortably move around the garden without colours jarring against each other.
Grasses were also included in this planting scheme to give that lovely feeling of movement within the plants. It was amazing how quickly bland and tired beds became a picture of colour and a haven for local wildlife.
