Devon garden with views across Dartmoor

A truly stunning house in Tavistock, Devon with a garden that was a blank canvas – a garden designers dream! The clients were looking for something equally stunning in their garden design and even a little quirky. Following an in depth discussion with the clients about their requirements and expectations I developed a design concept around the theme of ‘water’. However, the clients did not want the nuisance of maintaining and managing real water and therefore I developed the idea of re-creating the illusion of water with the use of a pebble mosaic rill accompanied by planting that you would find at the edge of a stream. These included grasses, dierama (aptly names angles fishing rod!), lythrum and iris. To further enhance the ‘water’ theme I included a bridge across the pebble rill in the form of a beautiful piece of local granite.

There also seemed to be something missing from part of the house and a raised decked area provided the solution and a welcome seating area to enjoy the views across Devon. This further enhanced the ‘water’ theme as the pebble mosaic rill appeared to be coming out from under the decking and the inclusion of even more grasses and ferns only went to emphasis the ‘water’ theme.

Design plans for a garden in Devon.

It was important to keep the garden grounded and with such a close proximity to Dartmoor I thought it essentially that we bring a little bit of Dartmoor into the garden. This came in the form of re-creating a stone circle that sat under the large oak trees. A wild flower meadow was also included in the plan with a fruit orchard to complete the picture.
