North Devon country house with a contemporary twist
The owners of this property in a quiet North Devon village were in the process of renovating their house and wanted a garden that matched the contemporary interior finish. The sloping front garden was the only garden apart from two small areas that flanked either side of the house. The garden had not been updated in a while and had become overgrown and in disarray. However, the white clean lines of the boundary wall was still intact and this, along with the contemporary glass balustrade on the balcony and front steps, gave me the starting point I needed to create a contemporary design concept.
I wanted to create something bold and contemporary but mix in a few traditional country favourites such as stone walling to maintain a link with the surroundings. I chose white smooth rendered walling for the curved raised beds and contrasting grey slate for the paving. The outcome was strong, aesthetically powerful lines and a striking contrast between the white and silver.
Stone walling was used for the side aspect and retaining walls. Stone faced steps turned an unused slope into a smart and sophisticated seating/dining area flanked by standard bay trees and box hedging.
The whole look was one of sophistication and elegance whilst still sitting naturally in the countryside surroundings.
