A beautiful walled garden in Plymouth
This garden was a pure delight to work in as not only was it surrounded by the most beautiful old stone walls but the client was a keen plants woman herself and therefore took a keen interest in the design and plants.
The brief was a fairly tight one, with the client needing a long stretch of grass for her young family to play on, a sophisticated seating area to enjoy the sun and entertain, a children’s play area and a grown your own fruit and vegetable area. All this and plenty of beds to fill with plants, colour and wildlife! The garden was fairly long and thin and already has a courtyard style area next to the house for dining (although this was mostly taken up with a mixture of pots and a large decorative stone plinth. The house itself was of Georgian style with straight lines and white walls.

After clearing the courtyard area, removing the unwanted stone plinth and restoring the slate flagstones, the two existing bay trees provided a formal entrance to the rest of the garden. However, I wanted to break up the straight lines and austerity of the house and went about creating a curved slate pathway meandering through raised curved terraced beds before reaching a large slate stone circle. By introducing these curves in the garden it instantly created the illusion of a much bigger and wider space. The raised terraced beds were rendered smooth and painted white to match in with the house walls and contrasted nicely against the slate pathway.
The planting plans were developed with the main purpose to provide year round interest, to introduce a colour scheme that unified the garden and to attract as much wildlife as possible!
