Steep town house garden in Devon

The initial challenge on entering this garden from the house was how to get to the top of it, without sliding back down again! Measuring just 4 metres wide by 10 metres long and with a gradient of approximately 30% this has to be one of the most challenging gardens I have ever designed.

The clients brief was to be able to utilise the whole of the garden by introducing some levels and to create a garden that was safe and low maintenance as they were intending to let out the property. It was only when I reached the top of the garden did I fully appreciate the lovely views across the rooftops of Tavistock and it was here that I knew a level had to be constructed to enjoy the views.

As the design developed I found myself able to introduce several terraced levels in the garden all with a different functionality. Timber style sleepers were used to support the decking/seating area at the top with steps leading down to a gravel area, which the clients thought was a great place for a BBQ and a few pots to grow some fruit and vegetables. This was covered with a Cotswold gravel and tied in nicely with the timber sleepers and split hazel fencing. Paved steps led down to the next level, which was retained with local Tavistock stone and gave the much needed opportunity to soften the whole garden with shrubs and perennial planting. Even more steps led down through the aroma of lavender to finally come to a stop at the paved patio area at the bottom of the garden.

With careful planning and design this small steep Tavistock garden eventually became a practical and interesting garden to enjoy.
